Just six years ago, many smartphone users had to swallow when they saw their mobile phone bill after their vacation. Anyone who wasn’t careful had already surfed the mobile Internet abroad for several hundred euros. In order to completely avoid roaming – i.e. using a foreign mobile network with your own device – and the high costs, many smartphone owners switch their devices to flight mode when on vacation.
Today that is no longer necessary, at least within the European Union. However, using a smartphone while traveling can still be costly. Anyone who knows the current regulations and exceptions can therefore save a lot of money – without having to do without the mobile Internet.
