MILAN (ITALPRESS) – On 28 May 60 years ago the Maserati Tipo 61 won the seventh edition of the 1,000 km of the Nýrburgring, the great endurance classic that takes place on the Nordschleife in Germany and which in those years experienced its greatest period splendor and popularity. With this success, the Maserati Tipo 61 driven by Masten Gregory and Lloyd Casner achieved a memorable double, reaffirming itself one year after the first place won in 1960, when Stirling Moss was at the wheel, flanked by Dan Gurney. The cars were customized with a white and blue livery, colors that inspired the Maserati MC12 Stradale as a tribute to those successes. The super sports car, which characterized the early 2000s, has recently passed the baton to the new MC20, renewing that sporting soul that has always distinguished Maserati’s DNA and which is laying the foundations for the return of the Trident to the racing world. The Tipo 61 was the best known of the series of five models designed by Giulio Alfieri, with the nickname “Birdcage”, due to the particular chassis: an intricate system containing about 200 tubes which, joined together in a complex lattice, formed a bird cage structure. This construction method led to a stiffer chassis, but at the same time lighter than other racing cars of the time, making the two-seater barchetta the maximum and best possible result for racing cars with front engine and traction. rear. Maserati began producing the Tipo 60 in March 1959, which already became Tipo 61 in November, in order to comply with the technical regulations required for participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The displacement of the four-cylinder engine was thus increased to 2900 cc, while the power increased to 250 HP at 7000 rpm. For the rest, the car maintained the setting and solutions already adopted for the Tipo 60. The weight also increased from 570 to 600 kg and the maximum speed from 270 to 285 km / h. Despite the great power, fuel consumption remained low and this characteristic was decisive in endurance races where the Type 61 managed to reduce the number of stops for refueling. In just three years of production, from 1959 to 1961, the Tipo 60 and Tipo 61 established themselves on the international racing scene, showing power and speed that allowed them to achieve a series of extraordinary successes and continuing the winning tradition of Maserati that today , with the beginning of its new era, it returns to planning a future in the MC20 motorsport field.
