A future as a satellite launcher for the Garibaldi aircraft carrier

by admin

A future as a civilian ship for the Italian aircraft carrier Garibaldi is expected: it could act as a platform for the SIMONA project (SIStema di Messa in Orbit NAval) for the launch of civil and military satellites. This is a project to be carried out with European funds, for both Italian and European users and NATO. Vega launchers would be used to launch satellites with a mass of around 300 kilos into low orbit.

This is one of the hypotheses that the Navy is considering. In 2024 the ship will be replaced by the Trieste amphibious unit in the role of command unit and aerial platform for amphibious operations, in conjunction with the withdrawal of the last vertical take-off aircraft AV-8B Harrier from service and the simultaneous operation of the new F-35Bs. But in consideration of the value of the unit, and of its residual life, the Garibaldi aircraft carrier will not be dismantled but a new use will be sought.

The Rid magazine (Italian defense magazine) has become aware of a further hypothesis being examined by the Navy: the ship could be transformed into a drone carrier, for use in the maritime field of unmanned aircraft and for surveillance / reconnaissance and for the attack, which require a relatively long flight deck for take-off and landing.
