Piaggio, Honda, Ktm and Yamaha announce the official agreement for the foundation of the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (Sbmc) for the diffusion of electric vehicles, starting from the development of interchangeable batteries.
“With the aim of promoting the large-scale diffusion of light electric vehicles such as mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, motor tricycles and quadricycles, and encouraging a more sustainable management of the battery life cycle in line with international climate policies – yes reads in a joint statement – the founding members of the Consortium believe that the development of low-voltage electric mobility is fundamentally dependent on the availability of swappable battery systems, designed on the basis of common specifications’.

The Consortium therefore aims to solve the problems concerning autonomy, charging times, infrastructure while pursuing four main objectives: development of common techniques for interchangeable battery systems, verification of the possibility of sharing battery systems, definition and promotion of the common specifications of the Consortium to be proposed as a standard to the bodies of European standardization and international and extension of the adoption of the Consortium’s common specifications at a global level.
