Alcohol, cigarettes, soft drinks: Italy is among the most tolerant European countries

Italy is relatively tolerant of lifestyles, this is confirmed by the new edition of Nanny State Index, which places our country in twenty-sixth place out of 30 European nations for which the severity of the regulations in force has been assessed. The Nanny State Index explores the degree of restrictiveness of regulation in four areas related to lifestyle: alcohol, e-cigarettes, food and soft drinks e tobacco products.

In the 2021 edition, the most restrictive countries are Norway, Lithuania and Finland, while the most tolerant are Germany, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg. Italy occupies the 26th position, thus showing itself to be a fairly open reality: it belongs to the group of totally free states as regards alcohol and tobacco products. While, as regards the use of electronic cigarettes and food and soft drinks, it falls into the immediately following category, that of countries considered fairly free.
