The Algerian president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, yesterday received the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, on an official visit to Algeria. Several cooperation agreements and memorandums of understanding have been signed between the two countries in different sectors, including energy, knowledge economy and start-ups, tourism and crafts, communication and sports.

Tebboune welcomed “the convergence of views and agreement on the continuation of efforts to maintain peace and security both regionally and internationally.” He stated that he had “a long and in-depth exchange” with his Iranian counterpart on the “exceptional conditions” prevailing in the current situation at the regional and international level, in particular on the aggression and Zionist crimes perpetrated in Gaza”, praising, at the same time, “the positions of the Iranian leadership, which supports the Palestinian people and rejects Zionist aggression in the face of the shameful silence of some countries”.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said he had agreed with his Iranian counterpart to strengthen coordination and consultation on the Palestinian issue, reaffirming “the right of the Palestinian people to the creation of their own independent state on the June 1967 borders with Al-Quds as its capital.

“We have noted with interest the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) relating to the complaint presented by South Africa regarding the genocide committed in Gaza by the Zionists”, indicated the President of the Republic, underlining that he had “given instructions to the Permanent Mission of Algeria at the UN to ask for an urgent meeting on this issue, which was held and other meetings will take place at the request of Algeria”.

“Today’s meeting constitutes an important stage in which we discussed bilateral relations in general and examined ways to promote them,” added Tebboune, reiterating on this occasion “his determination to seriously commit to raising these relations to a level that reflects the common political will of the two countries.”

For his part, the Iranian president affirmed the convergence of the positions of the two countries regarding “the war crimes and genocide committed by the Zionist entity against the Palestinian people, as well as its determination to kill children and women and destroy homes”.

He also expressed his thanks to the Iranian President for his participation in the 7th Summit of the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries (GCF), which was, he said, “a success thanks to the friends and brothers of Algeria, including the ‘Iran.

Regarding the bilateral relations which he defined as “historic and deeply rooted”, the Iranian president specified that he had discussed with the President of the Republic the ways and means to strengthen these relations, stating that his visit to Algeria is “a success”, thanks to the results obtained in order to promote bilateral cooperation in all sectors, especially economic ones.
