Alitalia, this is what the EU wants: market recruitment and MilleMiglia put up for tender

by admin

ROMA – Either the Alitalia brand with the tricolor, or the MilleMiglia points. And employees chosen on the market and not only among the company’s personnel in extraordinary administration. These are some of the stakes placed by the European Union on the road to the newco that needs to take off before the summer to intercept the recovery of tourism. Conditions discussed today in a meeting between the EU Commissioner Vestager and the ministers Franco, Giorgetti and Giovannini. The virtual meeting was described as “constructive” by Brussels. “The work continues on a technical level” an EU spokesman reported in the afternoon at the end of the third round of videoconference talks. Now the game will be played on some filings at the plant which is based on a halved fleet with direct transfer of the flight part to Ita.

On the table there are, in fact, the European proposals to give the ok to a company that is born under the banner of “discontinuity” with the old one. A carrier with a bonsai fleet with about 45 aircraft and a workforce of less than 3,000 people caught on the market. Ita, a company owned by the Mef, must comply with the agreements in order to leave: only the “flight” sector can be sold by direct negotiation between commissioners and Ita. On the other hand, the race is coming for handling, maintenance and the MilleMiglia program. Another non-negotiable point, according to the EU, is that of the alliance between Alitalia and a European partner. In pole position for an initially commercial agreement there is Lufthansa even if Air France could try the coup to keep Alitalia in Sky Team. But the knot that threatens to explode the protest of the employees of the Roman carrier, remains that of the new hires in Italy: according to the Commission, it will be necessary to draw on lists (also) different from that of workers today in Alitalia which, once the chapter is closed of the old company, will flow into a sort of limbo in liquidation.

The troika of ministers, faced with the EU aut aut, will try to snatch as many planes as possible and therefore a greater number of workers involved. A close dialogue also on the request from Brussels to cut slots – the take-off and landing strips – at the Linate airport. Alitalia today holds 70% of it. Too many according to Europe, which wants a deep cut in this monopoly in the Milanese airport. A situation of uncertainty to which are added both the umpteenth postponement of the meeting between Alitalia commissioners and trade unions, and the delay announced for the payment of salaries in March. More than enough reasons to unleash the anger of the category that today took to the streets with two demonstrations: the first with Cgil, Cisl, Uil, Ugl in addition to the protest of pilots and flight attendants Anpac, Anp and Anpav and Cub Trasporti, Acc and USB, which took place for a few hours in Fiumicino. The second, organized by the confederates at the Ministry of Development, with the participation of the employees of the national aerospace sector in crisis.

«We must not submit to the diktats of the EU – says Marco Veneziani of the National Pilots Association – all the big airlines have been saved from bankruptcy by their respective governments with substantial aid. We need to keep the slots and the fleet so as not to endanger the future of Alitalia and its employees ”.
