Good news for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, on the day when the theaters in the “yellow” regions reopen and when the Milanese opera body lays the first stone of the new building in via Verdi, designed by Mario Botta with Emilio Pizzi, to expand the spaces of the theater. The Armani group, another symbol of Milanese and Italian excellence in the world, will become a Founding Supporting Member of the Opera Foundation from next May 17.

This was announced by the board of directors of La Scala, although for the formalization of the entry it will be necessary to wait for the co-optation of the shareholders’ meeting in mid-May.

Reopening on 11 May with Muti concert

La Scala will reopen to the public on 11 May with the concert of the Wiener Philharmoniker conducted by Riccardo Muti. This is a symbolic date because the reopening concert of the theater directed by Arturo Toscanini was held on 11 May in 1946. The public (maximum 500 people) will be accommodated in the boxes. The platform built during the lockdown in the stalls to accommodate the orchestra will therefore be maintained.

A partnership between big Milanese around the world

The partnership between the king of fashion and the queen of Italian opera houses is long-standing: Giorgio Armani was among the first to support the Foundation, after its birth in 1997, and is now back to do so, “with renewed commitment, in a particularly delicate moment for the world of entertainment ”, reads the press release issued by La Scala. As a supporting member, the Armani group will pay the theater 600,000 euros over five years, as required by the Foundation’s statute.

«My commitment to Milan, in this last year so shocking, has been important on all fronts and I certainly could not neglect the culture sector, which has been hit hard in every aspect – declared Giorgio Armani, CEO of the group -. This new initiative is dedicated to the city of Milan, for the symbolic value of the Scala, but also for my emotional and personal ties with it, for the memories of the many shows and concerts I have attended, of the illustrious guests I have dressed, of experiences unforgettable as the creation of the costumes, in 1994, for Richard Strauss’ “Elektra” directed by Maestro Sinopoli. Now, more than ever, I feel the moral duty to actively contribute to the support of the theater, a heritage of Milanese and non-Milanese people, a true symbol of intellectual resistance ».
