Automotive, in 2021 the growth is only apparent and frightens the components crisis

The automotive supply chain is not enough vaccines or green certificates to overcome the pandemic. The appeal launched by the supply chain is an alarm message, there is still no trace of a real recovery. The main problem lies in the componentry crisis that the sector is going through. Finding the parts to produce vehicles is becoming complicated for car manufacturers, especially microchips. Semiconductors are having a hard time, delivery times are getting longer, costs are rising, and sales are plummeting.

“On the car market, exhausted by the pandemic, another blow is coming: the semiconductor crisis that is affecting the production of cars in an increasingly serious way”. This is the os launched by the promotor study center, a research structure specialized in sector analysis. Sales are up compared to last year, but the comparison with the world without Covid remains merciless. If it is true that in the period January-August of this year sales increased by 12.7% compared to 2020, the real comparison to be considered is that with 2019. And here the minus sign appears in front of many data, first of all all precisely that on sales: -23% compared to 2019 in the period January-June, -24.4% if we also consider the months of July and August. Almost one in four cars less, and the trend is even negative.

The near future does not bode well. In fact, the problem lies upstream, in the semiconductor crisis that is affecting the whole continent, all in a period in which the hoped-for transition to electricity is struggling to mesh. “It is necessary that our country adopts an incentive policy for the transition to electric cars as soon as possible, which overcomes the episodic interventions and provides permanent support both for the purchase of green cars and for those of traditional cars with low emissions” is the comment of Gian Primo Quagliano, president of the promoter study center. “The opportunity is the next Budget Law, and also the European Union’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan that will bring huge resources to Italy”, concludes Quagliano.

It is partially better for the commercial vehicle sector. This was reported in a report signed by Unrae, the association that brings together foreign car manufacturers operating in Italy, based on the data on registrations provided by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility. In the months of July and August 2021, sales of industrial vehicles with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3.5 tons increased respectively by 44.4% and 20.5%, and since the beginning of 2021 the increase is +4. , 2% compared to two years ago. But the difference between the weight categories is large, heavy vehicles are once again growing (+ 7.3%), while for the others the sign is still negative (-35.8% for the weight class up to to 6 tons and -0.7% for that up to 16 tons).

“The numbers we read are not brilliant – says Paolo Starace, president of the industrial vehicles section of Unrae – but what worries us most is their intermittent trend, resulting from the impossibility of manufacturers to deliver vehicles regularly due to the lack of of components “. The crisis in the component sector is therefore also frightening for the commercial vehicle segment. “The slowdown and suspension of some productions have lengthened delivery times, also increasing production costs, largely borne by the manufacturers themselves”, concludes Starace.
