Bari, Bosch announces 700 redundancies in five years

by admin

The acceleration on electric cars has its first effects in Bari with the management of the Bosch plant, focused on internal combustion engines, which today announced 700 redundancies in the next 5 years, out of a staff of 1700 employees. An announcement that also makes Bari the first corporate crisis in Italy caused by the transition to electric cars and therefore a first case of industrial reconversion to be financed with PNRR funds in terms of environmental transition. The announcement of the redundancies was made at the end of the meeting between OO.SS. and company management, convened by the Puglia region.

Factory at risk

According to the unions, the very survival of the factory is so at risk that it had experienced difficult times already in 2017, when the layoffs were averted by resorting to social safety nets, and the voluntary and incentivized exits of 190 people. The pivot point is all in the production specialization of the plant which, from an industrial point of view, has attracted new products both in the traditional diesel sector and in new sectors. But the continuous contraction of diesel still produces a heavy surplus, while on non-diesel productions, above all on the e-bike, about 350 people work and the commitment of a further 100 is expected. But about 80% of the workforce is still engaged on diesel, which continues to decline more and more rapidly due to European regulations. According to Uilm union sources, the CP1H from 2.1 million pieces in 2017 rose to 400 thousand pieces in 2022 and will practically go to zero in 2027; CP4 from the current 720 thousand pieces will drop to 455 thousand in 2027. “We ask Bosch – explain Gianluca Ficco, Uilm national secretary, and Riccardo Falcetta, secretary of Uilm of Bari – to finally adopt a logic of Italian and European solidarity in favor of Bari, because as a whole the German multinational is doing well and is investing in new technologies, only it is doing it elsewhere. Intra-group solidarity must serve not only to bring to Bari processes that today are even outsourced, but above all to assign an adequate productive mission in the context of the green economy “.

The Puglia Region has opened a permanent crisis table

The Puglia region has opened a permanent crisis table on the whole dispute and promises formal contacts both with the parent company and with the Mise, where, according to the trade unions, a plan for the reindustrialisation of the plant must be presented, capable of eliminate the redundancies reported by highlighting the necessary investments and financial resources. Confindustria’s reactions are concerned. “The transition to the electric car accelerated too quickly, which is crushing the entire automotive industry – warns Sergio Fontana, president of confindustria Bari-Bat and Puglia. This does not mean that we must surrender to history, but we must gear up to ride the change. In fact, Bosch is doing its part. In just 4 years it has developed 7 new products and is ready to undertake a courageous conversion, but to meet this challenge, Bosch must be able to count on adequate industrial policies. Extraordinary solutions are needed for Bosch and for the entire automotive sector of the country facing an epochal crisis ”.
