Bper, Unipol chooses Montani as new CEO

by admin

Unipol chooses the discontinuity line for Bper Banca. And it approves the launch of a list of 7 candidates for the next board of the Modenese bank in the name of full renewal. Starting with the name of the CEO: Piero Luigi Montani is in fact the surprise name chosen as a candidate for the position of CEO instead of the current number one, Alessandro Vandelli, who will not be reappointed to the board. A surprise move, the one signed in the evening by Unipol, the main shareholder of the Modenese bank, in which it holds a stake of approximately 19%. Following a long Board of Directors that approved the accounts relating to 2020, confirming the preliminary ones of last February 12, the group led by Carlo Cimbri has given the green light to the composition of the list that it will propose to the shareholders’ vote on the occasion of the assembly of 21 April next: on that occasion the control bodies of the Modena institute will be renewed.

Piero Montani future CEO

The choice of the new CEO therefore fell on a long-time banker like Piero Luigi Montani. Born in Genoa in 1954, Montani spent time in some of the main Italian banks. Starting with Bpm – where he held the role of Chief Executive Officer before joining Carige – a bank that according to rumors is Bper’s predestined “bride”. The banker has also held the position of number one among others in Popolare Novara (then merged in 2002 with Pop. Verona), Antonveneta (until 2008) and Carige. Recognized as a track-record in mergers and restructuring, appreciated by Via Nazionale, Montani is a figure esteemed by institutional investors, a non-secondary element in terms of consolidation. We will see if his future appointment will favor a possible aggregation with BancoBpm led by Giuseppe Castagna.

The departure of Alessandro Vandelli

Out of the game then, and a bit surprisingly, Alessandro Vandelli. CEO of the Modenese bank since April 2014, Vandelli has led the group in the phase of intense growth and profound transformation achieved in recent years. A transformation that took place through derisking and extraordinary operations – from the merger of Unipol Banca to the incorporation of Banco di Sardegna up to the recent acquisition of the Ubi business unit – which led the bank to effectively double its assets, now over 100 billion, creating the conditions for generating the third maxi-pole behind Intesa and UniCredit.
