«I believe that the bridge over the Strait is necessary to break the isolation that condemns Sicily to a situation of backwardness, also due to the absence of a stable connection between the island and Calabria. Among other things, the objections raised in the past will disappear with the works financed, therefore the absence of a doubling of railway capacity ».
This was told to reporters in the afternoon by the minister for the South Mara Carfagna during the press conference at Palazzo d’Orleans in Palermo, after the meeting with Nello Musumeci, president of the Sicilian Region. “From the report delivered by Minister Giovannini and made by the commission appointed by the previous government – he observed – the need for the bridge over the Strait emerges, from that report the underwater solutions were excluded, the solutions with one or three spans remain standing”. The minister then added: «What is interesting is that there seems to be the will, except for some now slight perplexity, to take responsibility for starting construction of the bridge. If the solution with three spans is reached, additional time will be needed, but defined, for the feasibility study. If instead you were to opt for a span you will still have to work on an adaptation of the current project which would take 6 to 7 months away. For the feasibility study we talk about something more ».
