How many Italians with a driving license would be able to pass the exam more than five years after taking the exam today? Few, very few: approximately . A fact that casts a shadow on road safety. And then what are the best and worst regions for the B driving license theory exam? These are the questions that are answered by the data published by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport on passes and fails in 2023 and analyzed by AutoScout 24 and Egaf Edizioni with the support of Confarca and Unasca.

Passed and failed

According to the simulation conducted by AutoScout24 and Egaf editions, together with the major Italian driving school associations Confarca and Unasca, only 22.7% of Italians who have obtained their B license for over 5 years would pass the exam today. Among the regions, they range from 7.1% of “promoted” in Molise to 28% in Emilia-Romagna and 31.7% in Lazio. But this is not a complete failure, given that the national sample answered correctly on average 15 questions out of 20. Among the most common errors are the quizzes on signs, warning lights and safety distance. How was the simulation done? Over 2,600 motorists from the AutoScout24 community who have obtained their B license for over 5 years were involved, administering a test of 20 quiz questions selected from those validated by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and used in the exam (the current official test includes 30 questions). To pass the simulation, users must not have made more than 2 errors out of 20 questions (10%), considering the same ratio as the official exam which currently includes a maximum of 3 errors for a 30 question quiz.

Driving license B, analysis by region

What are the best and worst regions for the B driving license theory exam? And the most failed or promoted in the practical test? How many drivers would be able to pass the exam more than five years after taking it? Many failed in Sardinia and Trentino, few in Campania

The data provided by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, on the 2023 passes and fails in the B license theory and driving exams, shows profound territorial differences, especially for the practical part. The percentage of those eligible for the theory, equal to 60.1% of the national average, shows differences of a few points with a minimum of 56% obtained by Lazio and a maximum of 64.4% in Sicily. Greater deviations in the practical exams, with 85% passed at national level, with the lower part occupied by Sardinia (68.3%) and Trentino Alto-Adige (71.8%) while Campania takes first position with 97.4%.

Why you fail the driving license exam

Among the most common driving errors, in absolute first place are intersections (52% of members), followed by public transport stops and roundabouts which divert traffic from the main lane (49%), and parking lots, in entry and exit (33%). But there are also other factors that have an impact on the final outcome, such as the size of the city and the difficulty of the roads, also considering traffic (for 76% of driving schools), but above all the candidate’s anxiety (94%) and examiner attitudes about stress (89%).
