Switching to electric vehicles is a top-down decision and in some cases even brutally imposed by national governments. The CEO of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares, who then added, thought so, indeed to affirm it without half measures. “If you offer clean mobility accessible only to the wealthiest shoppers, you won’t have a significant impact on carbon emissions. It is difficult to sell a 30,000 euro battery car when people can buy the corresponding traditional model for half the price ”.
The chip crisis is a danger to the industry
Struggling with the need to keep solutions accessible as much as possible that in any case go in the direction of sustainable mobility, the top manager then added that there is another problem on the horizon that puts the automotive sector in crisis, the shortage of semiconductors that it is pushing manufacturers to review the supply chain in order not to face an unsustainable situation from an economic point of view. “The longer the chip crisis lasts, the harder it will be to sustain the current business model of the automotive industry” explained Carlos Tavares himself.

Another problem is the increase in the prices of materials
More generally, a possible worsening of the chip crisis is being monitored within the Stellantis group until June pending an improvement that could only manifest itself in the second half of the year, but did not rule out there may be repercussions also in 2022. However, the shortage of semiconductors is not the only problem facing the automotive sector in recent months. In fact, the director of Stellantis Carlos Tavares himself recalled that in the future even the strong increases in the prices of raw materials will have their weight.
Concerns also about autonomous driving
On another topic, the CEO of Stellantis Tavares then expressed doubts about autonomous driving. “The move towards this type of solution will never completely take over, since there will always be room for driving pleasure”. The top manager then reiterated his personal conviction on the possibility of providing adequate resources to some brands that are part of the team of the group born from the merger between FCA and PSA. “Within our group there is room for everyone and in particular also for three premium brands such as Alfa Romeo, Lancia and even DS since these are perfectly complementary brands”.
