Cars: no rebound in Europe in 2021, the market loses 4 million units on 2019

by admin

A year to forget 2021 for the European car market, which loses 25.5% of registrations compared to 2019. A quarter of the market, equal to about 4 million cars, went up in smoke thanks to the uncertainties of the pandemic and the semiconductor crisis. The data released by ACEA on Western Europe plus the United Kingdom and the EFTA area reveal a very negative picture. Last year 11 million and 775 thousand cars were registered, down by 1.5% on 2020 – a year characterized by pandemic and lockdown – and against 15.8 million car sales in 2019, the period before the pandemic.

The impact of the pandemic

The impact of the coronavirus on the Western European car market was devastating underlines the Centro Studi Promotor directed by Gian Primo Quagliahe underlines “after the collapse of 2020 in which the pandemic had produced very heavy lockdowns, in 2021 there was no no recovery, indeed, registrations have registered a new decline ». The failure to recover in 2021 is partly due to the difficulties in finding components such as microchips, with production stops in many European factories.

“The crisis has hit all the national markets of the area which in 2021, compared to 2019, are decreasing with the sole exception of the very small ones in Iceland and Norway” notes the Study Center. Nor are the five major markets an exception – Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain – which absorb 70% of European registrations. The worst result was recorded by Spain which in 2021 compared to 2019 shows a decrease of 31.7%, followed by the United Kingdom (-28.7%), Germany (-27.3%), France (-25.1%). %) and Italy (-23.9%).

The car manufacturers

Among the European carmakers it is the Renault Group that closes the year, 2021, in the most disappointing way. In fact, the French lose 10% of registrations compared to 2020, a year already very weak due to the covid. However, also Volkswagen (-3.7%, with Porche and Seat which grew by around 6%) and Stelllantis (-1.6%) were also negative on the previous year. Jeep and Lancia are the brands that do best in terms of sales in 2021 while Alfa Romeo, awaiting a relaunch plan that expands the range, loses almost 30% of volumes in the area.

2021, on the other hand, is a recovery year for Hyundai, which is growing by over 20%. Toyota also performed well (+ 9.6%). Among the luxury brands are the BMW Group, which registers a few hundred more cars than in 2020, and Volvo (+ 1.1% on 2020) while Daimler, due to the poor performance of Mercedes, sells in the year beyond 10% of the volumes. Ford sinks to the bottom of the ranking by market share (from 4.7 to 3.7) and loses almost 20% of registrations.
