After the 5% decline recorded in 2019, world production in the auto sector suffered in 2020, due to the impact of Covid, a decline of 16%, returning to 2010 levels. In all, less than 78 million stops produced. units: 55.8 million cars and 21.8 million commercial vehicles. The data comes from the OICA, the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers. Already in 2019, world production had suffered a 5% drop to 92.2 million units (cars, trucks and buses).
In Europe, which accounts for 22% of world production, the decline in production was 21%, with negative data ranging from -11% to almost -40% in the main markets. 15.7 million cars were produced in America, 20% of the total. In the NAFTA area the decline was 20% (-19% in the US) and in South America by 30% with Brazil down by 32%). In Africa, production in 2020 fell by more than 35%.

Asia – the world‘s leading producer with 57% – contained the loss and closed with a minor decline of -10%, thanks above all to the recovery of China which closed the year with a -2%. Global sales have undergone – according to OICA data – a decline of 12%, less than the 20% initially expected thanks to the recovery in the last months of the year. Some world markets have experienced drops between -20% and -30%.
China contained the loss with -2% and South Korea recorded a positive sign with a growth of 6%. The Turkish market was also positive after two years of heavy losses.
