ROME (ITALPRESS) – The project “Friendly Pharmacies of People with Dementia” kicks off, born from the collaboration between the Alzheimer Italy Federation and Federfarma, with the aim of providing pharmacies with useful advice and practical indications to become “Friends of People with Dementia”. The initiative is linked to the broader project “Friendly Community of People with Dementia” that the Alzheimer Federation has been promoting since 2016 to combat the prejudices and discrimination that make dementia one of the most feared and misunderstood syndromes of our times, in order to to make cities suitable for those affected by cognitive impairment. A goal, that of fighting against stigma to improve the lives of patients and their families, also indicated as a priority by the World Health Organization in its Global Plan on Dementia. Through the reserved area of the federfarma.it website, pharmacists will be able to consult the “Farmacia Amica della Dementia” handbook, which contains information and data relating to the disease: numbers, symptoms, course and possible therapies in use. The correct behaviors for dealing with a person with dementia when entering the pharmacy are also indicated: among others, look them in the eye, keep a low and calm tone of voice, be patient and do not rush if they do not understand. Pharmacists will also find a series of practical advice on how to set up their pharmacy: clear indications on the shelves, lighting that helps to easily identify the shop signs and, where possible, a suitable space where the person can sit in tranquility and safety in case you feel a moment of disorientation. There are also some in-depth information sheets on the Alzheimer Italy Federation, the rights of people with dementia, the possible warning symptoms and the importance of prevention. “The Communities’ Friendly of People with Dementia are places where listening and inclusion are the order of every day. We of the Alzheimer Italy Federation are committed to ensuring that more and more people know about dementia to erase the stigma that affects patients and their families . The collaboration with Federfarma fits into this perspective: thanks to the widespread presence on the territory and the role of advice that pharmacists play every day. The Community Friends of People with Dementia initiative arrives in Italy thanks to the Alzheimer Italy Federation with the pilot project in the Lombard town of Abbiategrasso started on the basis of a protocol developed in Great Britain by the Alzheimer’s Society, an association of patients and pioneer families of the organization of Dementia Friendly Community in Europe.
