Copyright, publishers’ appeal: “Apply the EU directive”

by admin

MILANO. World Intellectual Property Day, which is celebrated today, this year is dedicated to small businesses. And the European publishers gathered in the Emma and Enpa associations together with their members, publishers of newspapers and magazines of all sizes in Europe, including the Italians gathered in the Fieg, take the opportunity to ask for the application of the related law of newspaper publishers – a protection of publications in case of re-use on the Net – established by the copyright directive whose deadline for transposition into national legislation expires on 7 June.

As stated in a note, the publishers “welcome” the choice to dedicate the day to small and medium-sized businesses because, they explain, “the diversity and pluralism of the press in Europe has historically been built up and is based on small and medium publishers ». During the pandemic, “European citizens have trusted the digital offers of newspaper and magazine publishers as never before”. And intellectual property rights, including those of authors and the related right of publishers “are the fundamental basis of this growing trend”, argue Emma and Enpa: “They are essential to ensure the future sustainability of digital and print publishing activities and the its fundamental role for the diversity and pluralism of the press ». Hence the appeal for “a rapid implementation of the related law of publishers”, which protects journalistic publications in case of re-use online. «More than ever – says Ilias Konteas, executive director of Emma and Enpa – the European press today needs a strong and effective right of publishers to be implemented in all member states within the deadline set by the copyright directive. The time has come for gatekeepers “, like large online platforms,” to finally pay for the use of publishers’ content. For this reason we ask that significant improvements in the law on digital markets to put an end to the abusive practices of all gatekeepers ». According to the publishers, a rapid adoption of the related law of the publishers is “an essential precondition” to achieve a rebalancing of the playing field in digital markets.
