Well the work done inside the archaeological excavations area of Pompeii, to put them in safety and enhance them. Bad not having implemented the external redevelopment yet. This, in summary, argues the Court of Auditors from the final report of the investigation on Great Pompeii project approved by resolution of the Central Control Section on the management of the State administrations of the Court of Auditors itself.

Positive balance in part

“Despite the initial difficulties and the delay, due both to the general complexity of the activity of safeguarding archaeological heritage and to the new and demanding nature of the activity, the Great Pompeii project presents a positive balance to date, having been used profitably the huge funding in a vast survey of the state of the archaeological remains and in the interventions to make the domus and buildings safe, in their recovery, in the extraordinary maintenance of the buildings located in the emerged from the excavations of the ancient city of Pompei, as well as in the restoration of a large surface of decorative devices, and finally in making the site more accessible to the public, with the creation of suitable paths to overcome architectural barriers “, reads the concluding report. Through the Great Pompeii Project, the judicial body notes, for an amount equal to 105 million euros, 2/3 of which financed by the European Union, 76 works were carried out to secure the buildings making up the unearthed part of the city of Pompeii, with a total cost of 96.48 million euros. “Now – recommends the Court – it will be necessary to ensure an ordinary maintenance regime of the site, to avoid the repetition of degradation and collapses, also by strengthening the professional equipment of the Archaeological Park, adequate in number and skills”.

Negative on the buffer zone

“But not so positive – underlines the Court of Auditors – are the results regarding the recovery of the surrounding archaeological areas”. In fact, the Section notes that “by acknowledging the recommendations formulated by Unesco since 2011, the environmental recovery and enhancement of the so-called buffer zone was envisaged, consisting of the archaeological areas including and surrounding Pompeii, Ercolano e Torre Annunziata, with the establishment of a special one Great Pompeii unit». And again,« Despite the fact that the Unit has drawn up the site management plan in 2018 Unesco archaeological areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata, to date the institutional development contract, an instrument indicated by the financial law of 2018 for the realization of the Plan itself, does not yet appear to have intervened “.

To the Minister of Culture: the development contract soon

The Control Section, therefore, having identified the criticalities in the use of resources useful for achieving this objective, recommended to the Ministry of culture, driven by Dario Franceschini, to promote the rapid definition of the development contract, the consequent preparation of the projects to be financed and their timely implementation.
