Costco Shoppers Beware: Scammers Targeting Members with Fake Emails

Costco Warns Customers of Email Scam Targeting Membership Information

Costco Wholesale Corporation, a well-known store chain based in the United States, recently implemented new measures to prevent illegal activities, such as theft, within its customer membership program. However, these changes have not been well-received by consumers.

Despite the initial backlash, reports have emerged of a new variant of theft specifically targeting Costco customers. The company’s directors have warned the public about criminals operating through unofficial emails in an attempt to steal personal data and bank card information.

One Costco shopper, Michael Brown, shared his experience with a local television channel after receiving a suspicious email claiming his membership was expiring soon. The email offered a free three-month extension of membership status and requested sensitive information such as bank card details and home address.

Concerned about the legitimacy of the email, Brown verified his membership status directly with Costco and confirmed that the email was indeed a scam. Authorities from the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office in California issued a warning to the public on February 15 to inform Costco customers about the fraudulent scheme.

To avoid falling victim to such scams, officials advised Costco customers to verify their membership status directly through a phone call or by visiting Costco’s official website. Stay informed and protect yourself from potential fraud by taking necessary precautions when handling personal information online.
