By analyzing the whole of 2020, thanks to the use of the redundancy fund, it was possible to ensure a summary holding of employment in Sicily. This is one of the data contained in the document that analyzes “Trends and projections on the economy and the labor market after the pandemic” relating to the month of March and drawn up by the CGIL study center led by Cesare Damiano and Maria Giovannone presented this morning.

In fact, it is possible to note the substantial increase (equal to + 2,268.84%) in the entire regional territory, which becomes even more evident in provinces such as Ragusa, Caltanissetta and Trapani. By restricting the focus on the Industry sector, it is worth noting the + 114,748.16% increase in Trapani, followed by the + 17,521.73% recorded in Caltanissetta. On the other hand, the percentage increases relating to the construction sector were decidedly smaller.

Among the data that emerged also that relating to the closures of last April caused by the lockdown which concerned 44.2% of the local units, 37.1% of the employees and 32% of the turnover on the economic activities recorded (national figure 43.6 %). As far as smart working is concerned, “significant differences emerged between North and South – notes the study – in the ability to convert public service work into agile work: the share of workers in agile work in the public administration, in the South, was lower to that of the Center and that of the North by over 10 percentage points “. In the private sector the difference was smaller with the creation of a gender deficit. In fact, women exceeded men by three percentage points.

In Sicily, moreover, based on Inail data processed by the CGIL as of 31 December 2020, there were 3,501 reports of accidents at work from Covid-19, out of a national total of 131,090, equal to 2.7%. On the other hand, there were 15 reports of contagion at regional level with a fatal outcome, out of a national total of 423, therefore equal to 3.5% with reference to the same period of time. Continuing with the analysis of the Inail data, the percentage of infected women is slightly higher than that of men (52.9% against 47.1%).

The province of Palermo is by far the most affected area by the virus, with a total of 1,004 accident reports received by the Institute (equal to 28% of the regional total), followed by Catania (22%) and Messina (15% ). The age group most affected by the virus in Sicily does not differ from the national results: 48.2% of the total infected falls within the age group between 50 and 64 years, followed by 34.8% of people between 35 and 49 years. As for the professions, among the health technicians, the most affected by the virus, 88.4% are nurses, 2.7% physiotherapists and 2.3% radiology health technicians. Among the doctors, on the other hand, over 50% of the infected are general practitioners, internists, cardiologists and anesthetists-resuscitators. In the context of less qualified personnel in education and health services, the infections mainly concerned hospital auxiliaries.

The professionals most affected remain, as mentioned, those of nurses, doctors, socio-health workers and hospital auxiliaries. As regards “Manufacturing activities” (1.6%), the food industry stands out, while in “Commerce” (1.4%) sales employees were more frequently involved in contagion complaints. Finally, in the “Transport and storage” sector (1.2%) “postal and courier services” prevail.

Among the qualified professions in health and social services, the infected are all social and health workers, as well as among the drivers of vehicles, most of the infected carry out ambulance management activities. From a more careful analysis of the deaths reported to Inail, it finally emerged that 2/3 of the total are made up of health professionals or employees. Finally, among the unqualified personnel in the cleaning services of offices, hotels, ships, restaurants, the infected complainants are mainly cleaners of premises and interiors. Industry and services management recorded 93.3% of complaints, followed by management on behalf of the State (4.3%), Shipping (2.3%) and Agriculture (0.1%). Turning instead to the analysis carried out by sector of economic activity, 85.2% of the complaints concerned the sectors of “Health and social assistance” (78.4% of the total) or “Public Administration” (6.8% ).
