ECB, Lagarde blocks PEPP: ‘recovery still uncertain, temporary increase in inflation’

“Given the uncertainty, accommodative policies remain necessary in the months to come”. Thus the president of the ECB Christine Lagarde in a press conference following the meeting of the Eurogroup in Lisbon. “We are on the road to recovery, a recovery that is however still uncertain”, said Lagarde, also underlining that the ECB “is committed to preserving favorable conditions for access to finance, through the use of the PEPP endowment, and that so it will be at least until March 2022 “. Lagarde reiterated that it is too early to talk about the possibility that the ECB will reduce the anti-Covid emergency plan prepared with the pandemic QE from 1.85 trillion euros.

“The growth of the euro area will return to pre-pandemic levels in 2022”. The head of the central bank has also allayed fears about rising inflation, pointing out that “this year’s growth is temporary”.
