The German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) has called for Europe-wide agreement on an emergency gas protocol, following Moscow’s announcement of a new ruble payment mechanism.

“There are concrete and serious signs that we are heading towards a deterioration in the gas supply situation – said Kerstin Andreae, president of the executive committee of BDEW. The association does not rule out an impact on deliveries and for this reason has asked to “develop criteria for which industries and sectors will continue to be supplied with gas even in the event of a shortage.” According to the association, it is therefore important to include and provide an early warning level in the emergency plan, in order to better manage priorities in various future situations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced yesterday that Moscow will now accept payments for its natural gas exports to “hostile countries” in rubles only. This includes countries that have imposed severe economic sanctions on Russia for the conflict in Ukraine. Putin explained that the illegitimate decisions of a number of Western nations to freeze Russia’s assets have destroyed all faith in their currencies.
