Thousands of farms, horticultural, horticultural, agricultural and wine-growing companies that have undergone

CATANIA – «The rain of lapilli and the enormous quantity of ash that poured into the province of Etna caused considerable damage to the agricultural sector. Thousands of farms, horticultural, horticultural, agricultural and wine growing companies are paying incalculable damage to crops. Whole productions irreversibly damaged are bringing to their knees the companies already severely tried by a year of pandemic and economic contraction ». This was stated by the president of Confagricoltura Catania Giovanni Selvaggi, on the eruptive activity in progress on Etna with paroxysmal events that have been recorded since last February 16.

«The areas most affected are those of the foothills – he adds – but also Giarre, Acireale, Fiumefreddo, and large areas of the plain of Catania. A reconnaissance of the damage is started immediately and we ask for the intervention of the councilor for agriculture of the Sicily region so that the situation in Catania rises to a national emergency. The national government must order the immediate suspension of INPS payments, agricultural loans and bills of exchange for at least one year. We need to be concrete: we do not want promises but immediate measures given that we are still waiting for the money from the 2018 flood. I invite farmers – concludes Selvaggi – to report damage and inconvenience to the offices of Confagricoltura Catania and the province ».
