There are currently no plans to convene an extraordinary European summit on energy in July. This was reported by an EU source in the margins of the Eurosummit in an inclusive format. The official referred to a request from a leader to arrange the meeting.
Prime Minister Mario Draghi yesterday advanced the hypothesis and found the consensus of France. Meanwhile, the discussion between EU leaders on economic issues continues, including inflation and the ECB’s moves, and the parts of the text that refer to the gas issue are being refined. The president of the ECB, Christine Lagarde, has updated the heads of state and government on the situation and at the end of the meeting she will release the assessments of the ECB.
The Nordic countries in particular are holding back. Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson indicated that an extraordinary summit of EU heads of state and government in July can only be held if there is a concrete proposal on which it can be pronounced. It was Mario Draghi who asked for a meeting to be called in July to make a decision on the Russian gas price ceiling.
