Sure enough, as rumored, at today’s Connect 2021 event, Mark Zuckerberg officially announced the “renaming” of Facebook. But it is a “renaming”, their approach is actually the same as when Google changed to Alphabet. Simply put, Facebook Inc. will become a company called Meta in the future, and then Facebook and other “app families” will become parts of this company.
For Facebook, this move seems redundant (Alphabet has been around for so long, and everyone has been talking about Google), but it does make sense. After all, Facebook’s reputation has been going down in recent years. For Zuckerberg, who is aspiring to create a meta-universe, the greater its sense of existence, the greater the burden it may bring. At the same time, the name Facebook can no longer represent their various existing businesses. Taking a part of the name directly from the “metaverse” can better summarize its ambitions.
“(Previously) our brand is closely related to a single product, but it is no longer possible to represent everything we do today, let alone the future.” Zuckerberg said, “From now on, we will use the meta universe instead of Facebook first.”
