Federalimentare “Risk of increase in product prices for consumers”

by admin

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Federalimentare raises the alarm on the increase in the prices of raw materials which, at least for the moment, is on the shoulders of the food industry. “Our companies are experiencing a paradoxical phase. After having ensured supplies to the markets in a very difficult year like 2020, they are not yet in the desired phase of a gradual recovery. Waiting for the difficult profiles of relaunching exports and Horeca in fact, our industries have to face a phase of further tightening, which may not be short and which is bringing objective problems and new concerns to the category “, explains Ivano Vacondio, president of Federalimentare. The producer prices of the food industry, in fact, after having recorded a trend of -0.4% last January, rose to + 0.9% in March, while the consumer prices of processed food went in the opposite direction. , decreasing from + 0.1% in January to -0.8% in April. “The result is a squeeze of margins in the food chain – comments Vacondio – further amplified by the fact that sales relating to out-of-home channels have been largely cut and have not allowed the industry to find any recovery or compensation on this front”. A problem also confirmed by the numbers: although food production in the 1st quarter increased in quantity by + 1.8%, quarterly turnover decreased by -0.7%. For this reason, concern is starting to be felt in many food sectors. “It is clear that the food industry cannot take on every cost tension on its own: the whole supply chain must do its part if we want to overcome this crisis without the consumer being affected. If things remain as they are now, soon worries about the increase in prices of products that end up on the shelves will become reality “, concludes Vacondio. (ITALPRESS). ads / com 25-May-21 7:07 pm
