An eight million project, lasting five years, to raise awareness against child labor in the camps. The protagonists are Ferrero and Save the Children, who have renewed their collaboration in favor of the cocoa communities. The issue of sustainability represents a driver in the corporate social responsibility policy for the giant from Alba, which has set itself ambitious objectives in terms of management and traceability in the procurement of raw materials such as cocoa, hazelnuts, sugar, ‘Palm oil.
During 2020 Ferrero achieved the goal of sourcing 100% certified sustainable cocoa, through independently managed standards, through the main certification bodies such as Rainforest Alliance (UTZ), Fairtrade and Cocoa Horizons. The strategy in favor of sustainability
Ferrero, as the same company makes clear in a note, has been carrying out the Ferrero Farming Values Cocoa program for years to implement traceability along the cocoa supply chain, starting from the purchase phase of the raw material. And after having achieved the goal of sourcing 100% sustainable cocoa, a target set in 2011, Ferrero continues to work to ensure full visibility and traceability of its cocoa along the entire supply chain, also thanks to a system of two -ad hoc diligence.
In 2019, the company expanded its social sustainability strategy to include chocolate purchased from third parties. This is based on a series of distinctive principles that allow the Group to implement the activities of due diligence along the supply chain and to apply targeted solutions. Ferrero therefore tends to favor the choice of purchasing most of the cocoa in the form of raw beans, which are then processed directly in its own factories. The beans are physically bought from well-known groups of farmers, this helps to identify any problems and stimulate positive change in favor of greater sustainability.
The cocoa supply chain
In the 2019/20 harvest season, Ferrero was able to trace over 95% of its total cocoa beans back to the farms and is rapidly advancing in the traceability of third-party chocolate. Additionally, the company is making progress in mapping farmers to its supply chain, as part of its efforts to prevent deforestation and tackle child labor.
