For pasta, 2020 was a record year

by admin

Quanta pasta let’s eat? In ten years in Italy, consumption has doubled, from 9 to 17 million tons. The approval has risen compared to the pre-pandemic period and even the contraction of these months does not seem to compromise the upward trend. To tell it is the Italian Food Union, on the occasion of World Pasta Day which is celebrated on October 25th.

A critical data sees theexport of tricolor pasta to fall by 9.4% in value in the first seven months of the year compared to the same period of 2020, but in any case it holds with a + 13% on 2019. Italy remains a very strong country both for production , which reaches 3.9 million tons, and for exports with 2.4 million. Favored by the Mediterranean diet, per capita consumption touches i 23 kilos a year, many more than Tunisia (17), Venezuela (15) and Greece (12.2), all countries at the top of the ranking.

In 2020, as many as 50 million extra packs of pasta entered the pantries of Italians. The year of the pandemic was a record, so much pasta has never been eaten: closed at home, many people around the world have preferred it, buying and consuming more of it. Overall, globally, one out of 4 pasta dishes eaten is Italian: with 3.9 million tons of product coming out of the pasta factories (equal to 62% of production), Italy is confirmed as the world leader, ahead of the USA, Turkey, Egypt and Brazil. The countries where we export the most are Germany, United Kingdom, United States, France e Japan, while those where the most important performances of 2020 come from are China, Canada, Spain and Saudi Arabia.

The export trend is in line with the settling of consumption recorded in our country as well. Looking at the volumes of pasta that go to the five most strategic markets, those that absorb more than half of exports, the balance towards Germany (+ 6%), France (+ 2%), Japan (+ 4%) and Double-digit USA (+ 10%), while the only negative value compared to 2019 comes from the United Kingdom (-4%), a probable consequence of Brexit. A market that has literally exploded is there South Korea, which in 2020 recorded a + 18% in pasta consumption. Remaining in Europe there is also theNetherlands, with + 5%.

In Italy the sector counts about 120 companies, employs over 10 thousand employees and generates a value of 5.6 billion euros. On average, it allocates 10% of its turnover to research and development for more modern, safe and sustainable plants and to adapt to new trends and changes in lifestyles, to new frontiers of taste and nutrition, in order to guarantee a dish of pasta for every need.

Precisely for this reason, next to the classic pasta of which they are available beyond 300 formats (it represents about 90% of the market), over the years wholemeal pasta, gluten free, with alternative flours and legumes, up to that made with the 3D printer have been added.
