On December 29, 2021, the 240,000-kilowatt offshore wind power project in Pingtan, Fujian Province, achieved full-capacity grid connection, marking the completion and commissioning of the most difficult offshore wind power project recognized by the industry in China.

The construction of nuclear power and wind power ran out of “acceleration”, and promoted Fujian to accelerate the establishment of a clean energy province. In July 2016 and September 2017, all 4 units of Ningde Nuclear Power Phase I and Fuqing Nuclear Power Phase I were completed and put into production.

As Fuqing Nuclear Power Unit 6 is about to be put into commercial operation, there will be 10 nuclear power units built and put into operation in Fujian Province, and the total installed capacity will exceed 10 million kilowatts. At the same time, Fujian has the largest capacity of nuclear power units under construction in the country. The first phase of Zhangzhou Nuclear Power’s 2 units is planned to be put into commercial operation during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period; the preliminary work of Ningde Nuclear Power Unit 5 and 6 has been completed and qualified for approval.

Clean and renewable wind power is also developing rapidly, ushering in a new era of offshore wind power in Fujian. In July 2016, the first phase of the Putian Pinghaiwan Offshore Wind Farm, the first offshore wind farm in the southeast coast, was completed and put into operation. In July 2020, the 10 MW offshore wind turbine with the largest single-unit capacity in the Asia-Pacific region was connected to the grid for power generation at the Fuqing Xinghua Bay Phase II Project.

Cai Hongxian, general manager of the State Grid Fujian Power Supply Company, said that the Taiwan Strait has abundant wind energy resources due to the “narrow tube effect” and the influence of the monsoon climate. According to preliminary investigations, the total reserve of land-based wind energy resources in Fujian Province is 41.31 million kilowatts, which ranks among the top in the country. The technically exploitable installed capacity is 7.73 million kilowatts, and the offshore technologically exploitable capacity is 5.75 million kilowatts.

Official statistics show that during the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period, Fujian’s installed wind power capacity has grown from 1.76 million kilowatts to 4.862 million kilowatts, of which offshore wind power has been connected to the grid with a total of 760,000 kilowatts. With the acceleration of a number of key projects, Fujian’s offshore wind power is expected to be connected to the grid with more than 5 million kilowatts at the end of the “14th Five-Year Plan”.

In addition to nuclear power and wind power accelerating the “leading”, Fujian is accelerating the construction of “large-scale storage batteries made of water” pumped-storage power stations, promoting the construction of the Fujian-Guangdong interconnection project, and striving to build a more “strong” power grid.

On December 27, 2021, Unit 2 of Zhouning Pumped Storage Power Station in Ningde City was successfully connected to the grid for the first time. The power station has a total installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts and an annual power generation of 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours. It can reduce grid coal consumption by approximately 207,900 tons and carbon dioxide by 415,800 tons each year. At the same time, Fuzhou Yongtai Pumped Storage Power Station is also speeding up construction.

According to the “14th Five-Year Plan”, Fujian will focus on building an energy supply system with multi-wheel drive and coordinated development of coal, oil, gas, nuclear, new energy and renewable energy.
