The cooperative giant Granarolo lands in the US and acquires Calabro Cheese, a company with a turnover of 25 million dollars and which produces fresh cheeses in Connecticut, in particular ricotta, mozzarella and burrata. Founded in 1953 as a distributor of Italian dairy products, Calabro Cheese now also owns a 5,000 square meter manufacturing facility and has a well established market in the New York, New England and New Jersey areas. The acquisition will therefore allow Granarolo to build a strategic platform to distribute a wide range of products from Italy.
For the Emilian cooperative giant, sales abroad in 2020 represented 33% of the total. The United States had long been a target country, but the pandemic had slowed down operations: “The consolidation of Granarolo in the United States is an important step in the group’s growth policy abroad – said its president, Gianpiero Calzolari – l ‘goal is to replicate the performances achieved in other markets such as the French one, where we now represent 18.5% of all Italian products sold ».
Only last week, Granarolo – which closed its last turnover at € 1.28 billion – had purchased Gorgonzola Mario Cost, with the aim of increasingly entering the production of PDOs, whose market is growing. both in Italy and abroad and allows for a higher return on milk.
