The Norwegian King Harald V has had a pacemaker inserted. The operation in Malaysia, where the 87-year-old was taken to hospital for an injection, was successful, the royal palace said.

Norwegian King Harald V had a pacemaker inserted during his treatment in Malaysia. The operation was successful, the royal palace said on Saturday. “The king is fine, but he still needs some rest.”

On Sunday, the palace announced that the 87-year-old monarch would be flown to Norway “soon” as part of a medical evacuation. He should be admitted to the National Hospital, which is part of the Oslo University Hospital, and will remain on sick leave for two weeks.

Harald V. was admitted to a hospital on the island of Langkawi due to an infection during a holiday trip at the beginning of the week. At the weekend, a pacemaker was temporarily inserted into the king. His personal doctor Björn Bendz was quoted as saying in a statement that he would make Harald V.’s return home safer.

On Friday, a medical plane from Scandinavian airline SAS landed on Langkawi, an island in northwest Malaysia.

Harald V is the oldest ruling monarch in Europe. The Norwegian head of state uses crutches and has repeatedly struggled with health problems in recent years. He had heart surgery and suffered from repeated respiratory infections.

Harald V, who has been Norway’s king for 33 years, rejected speculation about an abdication in January: “I stick to what I have always said, that I swore an oath to the Storting (the Norwegian parliament) and this is for life is,” he said in Oslo. The reason for the clarification was the abdication of his distant cousin, the 83-year-old Margrethe II in Denmark, in January.
