The International Monetary Fund (IMF) proposed today, at the G20 meeting, a $ 50 billion project to end the Covid-19 pandemic. The plan has the ambition to vaccinate at least 40% of the world‘s population by the end of the year and 60% in the first half of 2022.

The strategy requires not only commitments, but also upfront funding, vaccine donations and investments for the world to insure itself against negative scenarios. IMF chief executive Kristalina Georgieva said at the G20 World Health Summit that it would make sense for richer countries to increase their contributions to speed up the way out of the crisis. The proposal builds on the efforts already undertaken by the ACT program of the World Health Organization and the United Nations and, according to the authors of the project, would therefore be missing almost 13 billion dollars in additional funding from the G20 countries to reach the 50 billions of dollars.
