In Turin biomethane refueling station for heavy transport

by admin

A project that looks to the green future of heavy transport. It was signed by Iveco – Cnh Industrial Group -, Engie and Vulcangas. This is the Cascinette road refueling station in Turin which, one year after its inauguration, will be able to supply biomethane (Bio-LNG and Bio-CNG), a 100% green energy vector, first in the Northwest area. The biogas for the station is produced in a plant in the province of Lodi, is purified and liquefied on site and then transported to the station. Biogas is a green fuel with an organic matrix, the result of a Made in Italy and completely sustainable supply chain.

Inaugurated in February 2020, the station, covering an area of over 5 thousand square meters close to the industrial headquarters of the CNH Industrial group and near the ring road and motorway junction, was built for the refueling of heavy vehicles powered by natural gas. It has two LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) and four CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) dispensers, as well as a charging station for electric vehicles powered by a photovoltaic system.

The novelty therefore is represented by the availability of liquefied biomethane at the pump, duqneu with a higher power density, capable of guaranteeing, with a full tank, up to 1,600 kilometers of autonomy for a heavy vehicle. This is the first biomethane dispenser in the Northwest area and the third in Italy. Industrial skills in the natural gas sector are a characteristic of Made in Italy, thanks also to the experience gained by Iveco in particular in the field of commercial transport. Liquefied natural gas (LNG), in particular, compared to diesel, LPG or traditional fuels, allows a reduction of 95% of fine particles and 90% of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), as well as a significant reduction in emissions of CO2.

Biomethane, as a carbon free fuel, guarantees practically zero environmental impact and aims to occupy a substantial space in the energy transition process that affects both the automotive world and heavy transport. which aims to develop new strategies to improve the sustainability of commercial transport.

“We strongly believe in Bio-LNG – underlines Fabrizio Buffa, Iveco Italy Market Alternative Propulsions manager – because it is the only fuel capable of offering an impressive reduction in terms of CO2, considering the entire cycle, from production to final consumption”. To “test” the biogas is the Iveco S-WAY NP model which becomes, as Buffa reiterates, «the most concrete solution today to achieve carbon neutrality, in the name of a real circular economy». In fact, the biogas is collected from the biorefinery, transported to the service station and put on the grid for consumption.
