Intercomp’s smart parking in Cyprus for the management of three thousand parking spaces

by admin

The first installation took place in Villafranca, in the province of Verona. Then other municipalities of the Veneto arrived. Starting from that of Treviso, which was looking for a smart management system for the blue parking spaces in the historic center capable of decreasing the traffic generated by the search for a parking space, counteracting tariff evasion and allowing motorists to always have at hand an updated map of free parking areas. Now Intercomp, the Verona-based company that has developed an innovative smart parking system based on the Internet of Things and sensors positioned on the asphalt, brings all its know-how abroad and precisely to Cyprus, in the Municipality of Paphos.

Order worth over 600 thousand euros

Here it will install the system in over 3 thousand parking spaces in urban car parks. Intercomp has in fact won the international tender launched by the Cypriot municipal administration to equip itself with a hardware and software solution capable of digitally managing all the processes related to parking: a contract worth over 600 thousand euros. «We already have installations in some cities of the world such as Dubai, Singapore, Madrid and Lisbon – explains Giordano Ambrosi, marketing manager of the Venetian company – but we are talking about small systems that serve as tests, to evaluate the effectiveness of our product. In this case, however, we are carrying out a large-scale intervention for a municipality that needs to set up a parking management capable of coping with the traffic generated by strong tourist flows ».

Sensors on the asphalt

It all started in 2002, when Intercomp developed the project, which was also financed by Miur for its innovative scope. Thanks to the sensors on the asphalt and a management software, all the data relating to the parking are aggregated and transmitted to the various operators involved, starting with the municipal police. The Municipality can thus obtain strategic information related to parking, identifying needs in real time, seasonal flows, the more or less used areas. It can also encourage parking in certain areas of the city.

Increase in municipal collections

While the driver has an app to install on his smartphone that updates it in real time on the free seats. In Treviso, with this system, the Municipality has achieved an increase in receipts deriving from the payment of tariffs equal to 60% in a few years. Growth not determined by sanctions but by a sharp decrease in tax evasion. In turn, citizens were able to benefit from a better service, including guided navigation to the free seat closest to the area of interest, while traffic was significantly reduced, by about 30%. Intercomp, which up to now has installed over 9,000 sensors between Italy and the rest of the world, specializes in the digitization of production processes and services. And it has a strong vocation for innovation. The pandemic crisis has had repercussions on its turnover, which dropped to around 12 million in 2020, but has not slowed down its investment in research and development, an area to which the company allocates 10% of its turnover every year.
