Japan’s unemployment rate rose 0.2% to 2.8% in April, reporting the first rise in six months, due to the new state of emergency declared by the Tokyo government to combat the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The figure was expected by economists to rise from 2.6% in March to 2.7%. The number of employees in Japan was 66.57 million in April, up 290,000 on an annual basis. The number of unemployed, on the other hand, stood at 2.09 million, an increase of 200,000 units compared to April 2020.
