Saint-Gobain Glass Italia has announced the decision to resort to a reorganization plan for the Pisa plant which will lead to the dismissal of 29 people. The trade unions have been on a war footing for some days and today a discussion table was held with the company. “The situation of the Italian flat glass market records an imbalance in the balance between supply and demand which, with the restart in 2019 of a kiln in Southern Italy by the competition, has determined an overcapacity compared to the requests of the Italian market”, let the company know in a note. “This – explains Saint Gobain – has created an important competitiveness problem, which has led the company to prepare a reorganization plan for the recovery of profitability through an intervention to reduce the fixed costs of the Pisa plant which, if not implemented, would jeopardize a sustainable economic equilibrium for the business.

The contingent factors (Covid-19 crisis and related legislative provisions) – the note continues – have significantly delayed the implementation of the reorganization plan, therefore the Company can no longer wait. The economic results of 2020 were also particularly negative (also impacted by the Covid-19 crisis), and unfortunately also the first half of 2021 recorded a significant operational loss, which confirms the need for structural interventions “. The company has therefore opened a procedure at the end of which the reduction of 29 resources is foreseen out of a total of over 300 employees at the Pisa plant. Today the first meeting was held between the company and the trade unions at the Industrial Union Pisana, during which the parties entered into the merits and details of the procedure. “The meeting – the company said – took place in a climate that made it possible to advance, respecting individual institutional roles, along the path analysis and in-depth analysis of the reasons behind the procedure itself and of the best methods of implementation. The negotiating table has been updated to next 7 September for the continuation of the discussion, with the aim of starting to find preparatory solutions for the finalization of the procedure “.
