A little more than a year after the introduction of the agreement signed with the main trade unions relating to the use of the employment relationship, Just eat relaunches, announcing 4 thousand hires in the course of 2022. “We are satisfied with the results achieved in the twenty-four cities in where we operate », states the country manager for Italy, Daniele Contini. “Our model is working well after an initial adjustment phase and we want to continue in this direction”.

Permanent contract and chance for growth

The Just eat model is based on the use of a permanent employment contract, a series of protections (but also obligations) for riders and opportunities for growth. «The path foresees that a courier – explains Contini – can become captain, who provides a first level of support, facilitating some tasks, and carrying out others at the starting points. Subsequently he can become coordinator, that is responsible for a group of couriers with a significant increase in responsibilities ». Those who want it and have the necessary characteristics can then access further steps.

In addition to hiring, Just Eat is investing in hubs. The first was opened in the center of Rome, with a fleet of 120 electric scooters and 200 riders, the next is expected in Milan. These facilities allow employees to use the company’s transportation and facilitate operations in certain areas of cities, especially central ones.

The entry of 4 thousand new riders, however, will not entail a similar net balance in the number of employees, because in part the new entries will replace outgoing workers. The turnover is quite substantial given that, the company specifies, normally a courier he stays in the company for about six months, even if there are people who have been in Just eat from the beginning. The entry path usually involves a reduced number of hours of employment which can then grow based on the quality of the service provided by the employee and operational needs, given that orders are concentrated more at dinner than at lunch and with peaks at the weekend compared to weekdays.

The pilot project for the administration

Although the agreement provides for the possibility of using also the fixed term and the administration, the company confirms the model for an indefinite period, but has started a pilot project with the administration, in the hypothesis of not being able to directly recruit the riders of which he needs. The transition from self-employed to subordinate work required an education and training activity for workers, especially as regards the obligation to work the agreed shift (while in the self-employed relationship one can also not be present, which happened in higher percentage than assumed in the first period of transition to the new model) and the ban on working for other platforms during the assigned shift (also possible in the autonomous relationship).
