Leap Year 2024: Meaning, List & Calculation

Nationwide there will be an average of 248.8 working days in 2024 – despite the leap year, that is 0.6 days fewer than in the previous year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday. “This is because public holidays, festival days such as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, but also weekends are different than in 2023,” it said. In the current first quarter, despite the leap year, the nationwide average is 1.6 working days fewer than a year ago, due to the early Easter holidays. This would then also dampen the development of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter. “The number of working days also has an impact on economic performance,” explained the statisticians. The rule of thumb for development is: an additional working day means an average increase in GDP of around 0.1 percentage points. “Since other factors play a role, the actual effect may differ,” the statisticians said.
