Lenoci: “Taranto is no longer just pollution, the city is reviving in tourism”

“Taranto is not a Serie B city, it is no longer the polluted city of the past, it is a quality tourism destination and is suited to large-scale national objectives, such as the Mediterranean Games and to projects linked to a sea that constantly flags blu certify each year among the most beautiful in Italy ». Thus the president of the Metalworking section of Confindustria Taranto, Antonio Lenoci, about the debate in view of the ‘Stop the sacrifice of Taranto’ event, organized by the City Health and Environment Committee, next 22 May, in the Ionian city. “Taranto has seen its own image of an industrious and laughing city, overlooking a splendid gulf, defaced and degraded over the last few years due to selfish and short-sighted policies that have relied on old, but real, problems that are now, since our observatory, in the process of definitive resolution “, he writes in the note referring to the” health / work dilemma, repeatedly reported in recent years by all the media and still relaunched in social networks, that is, the problem of pollution caused, in the past, by an unscrupulous management of the plants of the factories in our area “.

A new harmony for Taranto

“We are convinced that the large factories and all the other economic realities present in our city and in our province are absolutely compatible and can thrive together”, says Lenoci. With reference to the steel plant, “the Aia (Integrated Environmental Authorization) works have been punctually carried out by the current manager of the plant (Acciaierie d’Italia) and it is now in a final phase having been completed about 90% of the planned works, therefore in advance of the deadline of August 2023 “, reads again in the note . “Not all of these interventions are visible – as is the full coverage of the mining parks of the steel plant, visible to all because it is impressive – but this does not mean that they have not been done”, emphasizes Lenoci. “If we are here to write it, it is because many of our companies have direct knowledge of the works carried out, having carried out them under contract,” he says. “These companies have been working in the steel mill for years, they have traveled the factory inch by inch and therefore know the factory, on which they have intervened (and still intervene) to ensure that environmental interventions are carried out with all the trappings and precautions already appropriately defined », he goes on.

Just talking about pollution doesn’t help the city

“We are resurrecting. There is still a lot of work to be done but we will do it. And continuing to tell the story of a Taranto victim only of pollution does not help us to recover, on the contrary, it inflicts an unjust sentence on the city to remain a place to escape for life “, he adds.” What we want is to invite the media, as well as the television personalities who offer themselves as testimonials of only one aspect of the city, to be witnesses of this rebirth. Bring them here, to tell about many other faces that too often are obscured perhaps because they simply have less audience ”, concludes the president of the Metalworking section of Confindustria Taranto.
