Ericsson and Leonardo have entered into a collaboration to explore and develop 5G solutions and new business models for applications ranging from industry, public safety, to critical infrastructures. The agreement, both domestic and international, aims to promote solutions that enable industries to transform their operations, increase safety and security, and provide innovative products and services.

Next-generation use cases will demand more reliable, high-performance solutions from 4G and 5G mobile networks. The collaboration will see Ericsson and Leonardo share research and development skills and expertise that span cybersecurity, 5G networks and services. The partnership will also cover cyber security, where cyber threats are becoming increasingly complex, particularly for strategic critical infrastructures.

For some specific projects and opportunities, collaboration will also be open to operators and other ecosystem partners.

Enrico Savio, Leonardo’s Chief Strategy & Market Intelligence Officer, comments: “The agreement brings together two major players, respectively in 5G technology and cybersecurity, to accelerate the delivery of more effective, secure and reliable communications. This will benefit communities, public and private organizations, allowing them to feel safer and more protected, as outlined in the objectives of our company’s strategic plan “Be Tomorrow – Leonardo 2030”. By combining their respective skills, Ericsson and Leonardo will create the strategic conditions for both companies can grow in the mission-critical sector and generate a high level of innovation, which will change the way we do business. ”

Emanuele Iannetti, President and CEO of Ericsson in Italy, declares: «5G has the potential to accelerate the digitization of industries and evolve mission critical public services. We are joining forces with Leonardo to get a complementary view of market demands and business drivers, taking digitization to the next level. Through the joint experience that we will accrue thanks to this partnership, we will be able to increase the impact of what we do for our customers ».

The cooperation between Ericsson and Leonardo will also allow integration and interoperability with narrowband digital communications. This will be done using LTE and 5G technologies to design and develop solutions that will provide “first responders”, such as firefighters, emergency medical service personnel and police, with fast and secure communications to save lives.

In addition to narrowband infrastructures, these solutions can support more advanced use cases and mission-critical services such as real-time video, massive use of sensors and augmented reality.

Under the agreement, the jointly developed solutions can be integrated into Leonardo’s Command & Control offering to bring the key benefits of mobile broadband into the daily operations of public safety users.
