Less sales and profits – Ems-Chemie is struggling with difficult circumstances – News

Ems-Chemie’s sales fell by a good 10 percent to 2.19 billion francs in 2023. Adjusted for currency effects, sales would have only fallen by 4.6 percent. The net profit amounts to 461 million francs, the dividend falls to 16 francs per share.

Ems-Chemie, led by SVP National Councilor Magdalena Martullo-Blocher, can look back on a difficult year. It was characterized by cautious consumer sentiment and a strong Swiss franc.

Problems in the auto industry

The company, which has its headquarters in Domat/Ems in Graubünden, generates most of its sales with polymers, which are primarily used to make car parts, but also ski boots and game consoles.

The auto sector accounts for around 60 percent of Ems sales. The chip shortage in the auto industry has now been solved, but customers are now reducing their inventories due to falling orders, Ems-Chemie said.

And successfully implemented new business would not have been able to compensate for the general reluctance of consumers and companies, as well as the effect of the strong franc.

Dividend is 16 francs per share

The bottom line is a net profit of 461 million francs. That is 13.8 percent less than in 2022. As a result, the dividend falls to 16 francs per share. Last year there was 20 francs per share.

For the current year, Ems expects net sales to be at the previous year’s level. However, the economic environment is likely to remain difficult. The company says that the first half of the year in particular is likely to be very subdued due to the depressed consumer sentiment in Europe.
