Milan, Boeri develops the vertical forest model on the canals

Returning to the area, the affected area is over 8,000 square meters and is adjacent to the ancient village of San Cristoforo overlooking the Naviglio Grande. The complex is developed through large terraces that will host private terraces and hanging gardens, from the city front from the north to the south. The building has a maximum height of 11 floors which drop down to three floors. The facades, together with the roofs, are totally occupied by greenery.

The construction site will open in January 2022 to arrive to deliver the homes in the second half of 2024.

The novelty of the project is therefore contained in the relationship between internal and external spaces, and in particular in the inclusion of balconies, loggias and terraces characterized by lush greenery designed to filter fine dust and reduce pollution, reducing energy consumption. The plants, about 170, and the shrubs (8 thousand) of Bosconavigli will be a bulwark of biodiversity and will change the colors and profiles of the building as the seasons change. The green “at high altitude” will occupy about a thousand square meters, while the gardens will be 3 thousand square meters. Overall, 60 different plant species will find space.

The focus on environmental sustainability also passes from photovoltaics, from the collection of rainwater for the self-sufficiency of irrigation of plant organisms, from the use of geothermal energy as had been done in the past to the vertical forest. All innovations that together with the presence of greenery reduce the temperature by several degrees in summer, almost excluding the need to use air conditioning systems. There will be public parks, while the redevelopment of the railway axis between the former Scali di Porta Genova and San Cristoforo provides for a public park along the Naviglio Grande.

“The architectural canons represented in Bosconavigli are the result of over ten years of research that aims to rewrite the relevant typological characteristics of the Milanese tradition by looking at a future made up of high-performance buildings integrated into the surrounding urban fabric” added Giovanni da Pozzo di Arassociati.
