MSC, the 22nd ship is coming

by admin

The 22nd ship of the MSC Cruises fleet arrives. Today at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint Nazaire, France, the construction of MSC Euribia has begun, which will enter service in June 2023. The new ship – whose name was unveiled today during the traditional cutting ceremony sheet metal – will be the most environmentally advanced unit of MSC Cruises, and the second in the fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the cleanest fossil fuel in the world.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises: “Just like the ancient Greek Goddess who harnessed the winds, time and constellations to rule the seas, MSC Euribia will master the use of sustainable technologies to protect and preserve our precious marine ecosystem . This ship marks a new milestone in our journey to zero impact operations and testifies to our commitment to promoting and developing ever more advanced environmental technologies. Our family has a seafaring tradition of over 300 years and for this reason we always try to protect the environment to safeguard our lifestyle and protect the planet for future generations. Together with our first LNG-powered ship already under construction, MSC Euribia will further reduce emissions by using the latest technology available. It will be one of the best performing ships in the world from an environmental point of view “.

LNG is the cleanest marine fuel currently available on a large scale and is capable of almost completely eliminating local pollutant emissions such as sulfur oxides (99%), nitrogen oxides (85%) and particles. In terms of global impact emissions, LNG plays a key role in climate change mitigation and MSC Euribia’s engines have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to those powered by standard fuels. Furthermore, with the future availability of bio and synthetic forms of LNG, this energy source will allow a path towards further possible decarbonisation operations.
