The new R7 is equipped with the 699cc CP2 engine, which we know very well as it is the same one that equips the MT-07. Its power is 73.4 hp (54 kW) for 8,750 rpm, while maximum torque reaches 6.7 nm at 6,500 rpm. Nothing new for the crankshaft which naturally remains in the 270 degree crossplane configuration. A 35 kW version will also be proposed to attract even younger motorcyclists with an A2 license. For the R7 2021, Yamaha has nevertheless brought some changes to the CP2 engine: among them a new ECU, revised exhaust design and optimized intake ducts, to which is added a new fuel injection setting. In addition to these changes, the R7 uses a slightly shorter gear ratio, which helps to give it the sportier character and, consequently, also more intense acceleration. The new R7 also complies with Euro 5 emission standards.

The front suspension is a KYB fork, 41 mm diameter with full adjustments (in compression and rebound). The fork angle is 23.7 degrees, while Yamaha says front-to-rear weight distribution is 51/49 for ideal sporting behavior. At the same time, the rear suspension called Monocross was also redesigned, which is adjustable in damping and preload. The weight of the motorcycle in running order is 188 kg,

In the riding position, the use of the clip-on handlebar is the result of extensive tests carried out by Yamaha riders to offer a sporty and ergonomic feeling.
