On November 10, data released by the China Automobile Manufacturers Association (“China Automobile Association”) showed that in October 2021, car sales were 2.333 million vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 9.4%. The overall new energy vehicle market continued to perform well, with production and sales approaching the level of 400,000 vehicles in October, and the penetration rate from January to October increased to 12.1%.

Chip supply eased slightly

According to data released by the China Automobile Association, in October, automobile production and sales reached 2.33 million and 2.33 million, respectively, up 12.2% and 12.8% month-on-month, and down 8.8% and 9.4% year-on-year. From January to October, automobile production and sales were 20.587 million and 20.97 million, up 5.4% and 6.4% year-on-year.

The China Automobile Association said that from the situation in October, the decline in automobile production and sales driven by passenger cars has significantly narrowed. Although chip supply in October has eased slightly from September, it still cannot fully meet production needs. Moreover, the market for commercial vehicles has continued to fluctuate due to changes in policies and regulations. In addition, due to factors such as insufficient demand, the automotive market is still operating at a low level.

In October, the production and sales of passenger vehicles were 1.988 million and 2.007 million, respectively, up 12.5% and 14.6% month-on-month, and down 4.7% and 5.0% year-on-year, respectively. Among the main types of commercial vehicles, compared with the previous month, the production and sales of trucks have shown a growth trend, and the production and sales of passenger cars have declined. From January to October, the production and sales of commercial vehicles were 3.939 million and 4.099 million, a year-on-year decrease of 6.3% and 2.5% respectively. Among the main types of commercial vehicles, compared with the same period last year, the production and sales of passenger cars continued to maintain a rapid growth trend, and the production and sales of trucks both showed a downward trend.

The China Automobile Association said that in the fourth quarter, with the steady and positive development of the macro economy, the demand for automobile consumption remained stable. However, there are still uncertainties on the supply side. Chip supply gradually eased in the fourth quarter, which will promote monthly production and sales to maintain growth, but the overall supply is still in short supply; rising electricity bills and continuous high raw material prices increase cost pressures for enterprises. Based on the above factors, the annual automobile production and sales will increase slightly over last year, but lower than expected.
