The inflation rate in Germany has fallen to 2.2 percent, data from the Federal Statistical Office show. But prices are still rising in one area: in the catering industry.

The reason for this is that the VAT on the catering offering was increased from seven to 19 percent.

Main courses are therefore around 8.3 percent more expensive than before the tax adjustment, and dessert prices have even become 9.7 percent more expensive.

Prices in the catering industry have risen so sharply

Since the new tax rates came into effect, the cost of main courses has increased by 4.9 percent. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 8.3 percent. Dessert prices have even increased by 9.7 percent over the past 12 months. However, this increase does not fully correspond to the expected effect of the VAT increase, which predicted an increase of 11.2 percent.

So far it appears that the tax increase has not yet been fully passed on to consumers. In addition, price increases in the catering industry were already above the general inflation level before the VAT adjustment, which could indicate additional price-driving factors within the industry or an anticipated pricing policy. It is also possible that prices will continue to rise in the future, according to the experts at Barkow Consulting.
