Recovering the lost 30 years, Japan revitalizes semiconductors: joins forces with the United States to develop a new generation of technology

by admin

In the field of semiconductors, in addition to the United States, where they originated, Japanese companies were once very strong, and even accounted for half of the world‘s production capacity in the 1980s. In order to regain its glory in the past, Japan has now launched the “Emergency Strengthening Plan for the Semiconductor Industry” to reinvigorate its glory, and hopes that the output value of semiconductors will reach three times that of 2020 in 10 years.

According to Japanese media reports, in order to strengthen the semiconductor industry, which is increasingly important in economic security, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan held an expert meeting on November 15 and announced the “emergency strengthening plan for the semiconductor industry” to revitalize the Japanese semiconductor industry.

Japan hopes to use financial assistance to attract manufacturers to build advanced semiconductor factories in Japan, and will provide assistance for the equipment update of Japan’s existing old factories, and will work with the United States to develop next-generation semiconductors, thereby boosting Japan’s declining semiconductor market share ,The goal is to increase the semiconductor revenue of Japanese companies to 13 trillion yen in 2030, which is about three times the current (2020) level.

In 1988, Japan’s market share in the global semiconductor market was as high as 50%, but in 2019 it has fallen to about 10%.

The “emergency strengthening plan for the semiconductor industry” announced by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan will be included in the economic countermeasures that the Japanese government is expected to finalize on November 19.This plan mainly divides Japan’s semiconductor revitalization measures into three stages (short, medium, and long-term) to promote.

Among them, the first phase (the first round of assistance measures) as the core of the policy is to ensure the production of advanced semiconductors in Japan. It will continue to provide assistance for several years in the form of subsidies to attract overseas manufacturers to set up factories in Japan. The subsidies will include the TSMC plan. The advanced semiconductor factory built in Kumamoto Prefecture will also provide financial assistance for the equipment upgrade of the existing old semiconductor factory in Japan to enhance the competitiveness of the existing factory.

In the medium and long term (stages 2 and 3),It will work with the United States to start the research and development of next-generation semiconductor technology, and will build an international cooperation system that can cooperate with global companies and other industries.
