Reina Mora Brewing Co.: From Hobby to Brewery Crowned “Queen of Beers” in Puerto Rico

Craft beer enthusiasts Carlos Ayala and Eduardo Somoza turned their passion into a thriving business when they established Reina Mora Brewing Co. in 2019 in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico. What began as a hobby for Ayala, a mechanical engineer, soon evolved into a successful brewery that now produces about 250 barrels (7,700 gallons) of craft beer annually.

The journey for Ayala started in 2011, when he began experimenting with brewing beer at home after being inspired by the growing popularity of craft beers. This interest eventually led him to partner with Somoza, also an engineer, to expand their operations and create a variety of 16 craft beers. The brewery’s unique name, Reina Mora, pays homage to an endemic bird in Puerto Rico, reflecting their commitment to showcasing local culture and flavors in their products.

From their house beer, Spindalis, to seasonal and collaborative brews like La Pajarita and Siete Pulgadas, Reina Mora Brewing Co. offers a diverse range of flavors that cater to the tropical climate of Puerto Rico. Using local ingredients whenever possible, the brewery focuses on creating refreshing and easy-to-drink beers that incorporate modern techniques and processes.

One of the distinguishing factors of Reina Mora Brewing Co. is their commitment to manufacturing and packaging all their products on-site in Sabana Grande. This dedication to quality control and distribution has allowed them to establish a strong presence in the craft beer market across Puerto Rico.

As they continue to grow and expand their reach, Ayala and Somoza have plans to increase their sales volume and further develop their canned product offerings. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, Reina Mora Brewing Co. is poised to become a prominent player in Puerto Rico’s craft beer scene.
