ROME (ITALPRESS) – Post-pandemic reconstruction offers the opportunity to change course and invest in a global food system resilient to future shocks, promoting sustainable and diversified agriculture capable of determining sustainable growth and protecting natural resources. But do we have a clear development model for the future? The answer to this question took shape during an online conference in the context of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto to illustrate the objectives and potential of the FAO GIAHS Program, following the collaboration that took place with Slow Food in the context of of the Building capacity project: advanced international application course on GIAHS (Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems) funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and which involves the Department of Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Forestry Sciences and Technologies (DAGRI ) of the University of Florence as implementing body and University Pole of the city of Prato (PIN) as partner. “We are facing the failure of intensive and industrial agriculture,” said Mauro Agnoletti, President of the FAO GIAHS Scientific Committee (SAG) and scientific coordinator of the Building capacity project: an advanced international application course on GIAHS. “Traditional agriculture has inputs and outputs in terms of energy and carbon emissions that make it more efficient than industrial agricultural systems, which may have higher yields but also require more energy. It is therefore more sustainable in terms of environmental impact. On the European continent, we are seeing a decline in cultivated areas, as many farmers are leaving rural areas. As a result we have a reduction in diversity in the landscape. This has negative effects not only from an aesthetic point of view but also from a political and social point of view. Biodiversity is a historical process, and the landscape is the result of environmental effects expressed together with cultural values through the shape of the territory. This is a value to keep in mind when it comes to quality ». (ITALPRESS). mgg / com 28-Apr-21 19:18
